George Clooney's "The Monuments Men" is a frustrating but, ultimately, positive experience. Built on an uneven narrative, the film is made enjoyable by a strong cast, a rich production design, and a handful of engrossing scenes.

Focusing on a band of scholars and artists who are tasked with protecting European artwork from the Nazi scourge toward the end of World War II, "The Monuments Men" begins slowly.

Though it feels decidedly like an old-fashioned, light-toned, war-set adventure picture, it is all concept and little forward motion from the get-go.

The stakes are low, and, though the Monuments Men have their hearts in the right place and the enemy is closing in, there is very little dramatic energy driving the story.

Still, not enough to shake the feeling that the writers only include a reference to the persecution of Jews every once and a while to keep from being deemed morally irresponsible.

Clooney means well. With a more linear and controlled narrative I think this would have been a winner. This one definitely dragged around the middle, because of the ensemble cast all having to split up and go to different places, the plot just didn't really drive itself forward.

I really liked the performances from Bill Murray, Matt Damon, and George Clooney, alongside some of the other actors, and I definitely was able to view their personalities which they developed, their personas and such.

I was also very interested in the historical context of the film, but honestly, it just fell somewhat flat because it didn't really have a driving force for a lot of the film.

It felt like it kind of wandered a little bit aimlessly, and it lost my attention at certain times just because the plot stagnated.

But overall, I thought it was pretty alright, and it definitely showed off an interesting group of people from history who aren't talked about much at all.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth. There was no heist. There was no structure. There was nothing memorable.

Just a few forgettable characters strolling around Europe and stumbling upon gold mines and art pieces. Clooney literally couldn't have adapted the story in a worse way.

His intention of telling the sacrifices of great men was unfortunately tainted with dull and scattered writing which did nothing but injustice to the legacy of the very people he tried to commemorate.

Truly all aspects of realism and creativity were thrown out the widow. I gave you chance after chance, Clooney, but this is the last straw.

It dumbfounds me how they made a film this inept with this cast and this easy-going story that practically writes itself as a mediocre feel-good adventure yarn.

I seriously fail to comprehend how many people worked on this for many months, and no one stopped this from happening. This film is shattering my confidence in the world, someone come help me.

It's not easy to get a film made, so kudos are deserved. The cast is bananas, the story is fascinating, and the cinematography, score, and camera work echo a classical Hollywood feeling shared by many war films of the 50s and 60s.

The Christmas scene and interrogation scene were really good, dare-I-say great. The issue is the script. The dialogue is pretty bad, and because the cast is so good the lines seem decent, but as a result, everyone feels underutilized.

Monuments officer Deane Keller had a prominent role in saving the Campo Santo in Pisa after a mortar round started a fire that melted the lead roof, which then bled down the iconic 14th century fresco -covered walls.

Keller led a team of Italian and American troops and restorers in recovering the remaining fragments of the frescoes and in building a temporary roof to protect the structure from further damage.

Restoration of the frescoes continues even today. Countless other monuments, churches, and works of art were saved or protected by the dedicated personnel of the MFAA section.
